'Goodfellas' actor Ray Liotta has died at age 67

cause of death for ray liotta Actor , who rose to movie stardom in "Goodfellas," has died in his sleep at a hotel in the Dominican Republic where he was shooting a movie. He was 67. Bob Mondello of NPR offers this reminder.

BOB MONDELLO, BYLINE: Few actors have ever been offered a better opening line for their star role.

(SOUNDBITE OF THE MOVIE, "GOODFELLAS")

RAY LIOTTA: (As Henry Hill) As far as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster.

MONDELLO: Ray Liotta slamming the trunk, which we learned later was a testament to how gangster he had become- those steel-blue eyes, the intensity that made him terrifying even when he was scared- all there in that very first shot.

(SOUNDBITE OF THE MOVIE, "GOODFELLAS")

LIOTTA: (As Henry Hill) For me, it was better to be a gangster than to be president of the United States.

(REDIRECTED FROM "RAGS TO RICHES")

TONY BENNETT: (Sings) Your love is all that ever mattered.

(SOUNDBITE OF THE MOVIE, "GOODFELLAS")

LIOTTA: (As Henry Hill) Even before I went to the cabin for the first time for a job after school, I knew that I wanted to be a part of it. That's where I knew I belonged.

MONDELLO: "Goodfellas" made Liotta a star, but by that time he had been noticed for almost a decade - first on television, then in "Something Wild", where he played a vindictive husband.

(SOUNDBITE OF THE FILM, "SOMETHING WILD")

LIOTTA: (As Ray Sinclair) You have to fight for a woman like that.

JEFF BRIDGES: (As Charles Driggs) I don't have to fight you, Ray. I'm going to take Lulu with me. We're about to get out of here, and there's nothing you can fucking do.

LIOTTA: (As Ray Sinclair) Oh (Laughter).

MONDELLO: Absolutely terrifying - then in "Field Of Dreams" as baseball legend Shoeless Joe Jackson...

(REDIRECTED FROM "FIELD OF DREAMS")

LIOTTA: (As shoeless Joe Jackson) Put one here, right?

(SOUND OF A BASEBALL BAT)

KEVIN COSTNER: (As Ray Kinsella) Right, you're a low-ball hitter.

LIOTTA: (As shoeless Joe Jackson) Man, I loved this game.

MONDELLO: ...And then "Goodfellas." For a while after this film, he refused hard roles, because he did not want to be typecast - for roles such as the devoted father in "Corrina, Corrina " on the side of Whoopi Goldberg. But pretty soon, he was playing ex-cons, rogue cops and, at one point, a Justice Department official who takes bribes and shares a shockingly memorable meal with Hannibal Lecter - unaware that it's his own meat that's roasting - in the sequel "The Silence of the Lambs," Hannibal."

(SOUNDBITE OF THE MOVIE, "HANNIBAL")

LIOTTA: (As Paul Krendler) That smells great.

ANTHONY HOPKINS: (As Hannibal Lecter) Yes.

(KEYWORD SIZZLE)

MONDELLO: Ray Liotta was definitely a nice guy - not at all like many of the roles he played. And with more than 100 roles, it would be hard to say that he was ever in a career slump. But his career had definitely experienced a renaissance lately. And if that first line in "Goodfellas" was his wake-up call in any way, he was still living that gangster dream- a harrowing role in last year's "Sopranos" prequel, "The Many Saints of Newark," and about to produce a Gangland documentary series. In short, he was still in his prime and a good guy to the last.
