Elon Musk: agreement with Twitter "temporarily suspended" due to estimate number of spam accounts

Elon Musk said The 44 billion purchase agreement on Twitter was "temporarily suspended".

In a tweet on Friday, the Tesla and SpaceX founder addressed spam or fake accounts on the social media platform, citing a Reuters report earlier this month on Twitter that less than 5% of his accounts are fake.

"The agreement with Twitter has been temporarily suspended pending details confirming which spam/fake accounts actually account for less than 5% of users," Musk wrote.

Twitter shares fell 14% in pre-market trading on Friday.

In a follow-up tweet, the billionaire said he was still "determined to take over".

Musk's tweet came a day after the social media company fired two of its top executives.

Twitter reported that the company is suspending most appointments, except for responsible roles, and"cutting non-labor-related costs to ensure accountability and efficiency".

Getting rid of spam and fake accounts was one of Musk's priorities when he struck a deal to buy Twitter for 4 44 billion. Musk also criticized the way Twitter moderates content.

The deal is expected to close later this year.

Earlier this week, during an interview with the Financial Times, Musk said that if the deal was approved, it would allow former President Donald Trump to return to the podium after he was permanently denied access after the Capitol riots on January 6.
